CAUSES OF BACK PAIN

Back pain usually results from a problem with one or more parts of the lower back.

The four key causes of back pain include: strain, structural problems, movement and posture, other medical conditions.

1._STRAIN

If you face any strain, tension, or injury in the muscles, it might result in back pain. Frequent causes of back pain are:

  • Strained muscles or ligaments

  • A muscle spasm

  • Muscle tension

  • Damaged disks

  • Injuries, fractures, or falls

Activities that can lead to strains or spasms:

  • Lifting something improperly

  • Lifting something too heavy

  • Making an abrupt and awkward movement

2._STRUCTURAL PROBLEMS

A number of structural problems may also result in back pain. Such as —

  • Ruptured disks

  • Bulging disks

  • Sciatica

  • Arthritis

  • Abnormal curvature of the spine

  • Osteoporosis

  • Kidney problems

3._MOVEMENT AND POSTURE

Adopting a very hunched sitting position can result in increased back and shoulder problems over time. Back pain can also result from some everyday activities or poor posture.

Examples Include:

  • Twisting

  • Coughing or sneezing

  • Muscle tension

  • Over-stretching

  • Bending awkwardly or for long periods

  • Pushing, pulling, lifting, or carrying something

  • Standing or sitting for long periods

  • Straining the neck forward, such as when driving or using a computer

  • Long driving sessions without a break, even when not hunched

  • Sleeping on a mattress that does not support the body and keep the spine straight

4._MEDICAL CONDITIONS

Sometimes back pain can also be caused by some medical conditions with nearby organs, such as:

  • Infections of the spine

  • Cauda equina syndrome

  • Cancer of the spinal cord

  • Arthritis

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease, bladder or kidney infections

  • Shingles

  • Sleep disorder

Hormonal imbalance, stress, anxiety, and mood disorders can lead to back pain.

Reasons Why Your Back Pain Could Be Lasting Longer

  • Like others, you assumed the pain would go away on its own...but it didn’t.

  • You ignored it, thinking “it’s only normal” because you’re getting older

  • The doctor or pharmacist suggested painkillers, which didn’t help much because, as soon as they wore off, your pain returned.

  • You tried other methods like therapy and yoga but didn’t continue because of slow progress.

  • You relied on google, YouTube, and home remedies which didn’t make any difference (or maybe even made your pain worse!)

  • You thought rest and a few relaxing massages would fix the pain, but it was worse, or the pain returned a few days later.

If this sounds familiar to you, we would love to help you get rid of your pain within just a few days. You can easily book a call to talk with a movement expert and Doctor of Physical Therapy to find out what can be done to help you.
